Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Francesca surname and I would like to apply to the Master of Arts in Translation Studies for the 2022 autumn term.
I am an undergraduate student and I am living in Italy. I earned my degree in Modern Languages and Cultures from the University Calabria on the 14th of July 2022. My university studies had duration of three years. I learned the basics in linguistics, philology and translation, with emphasis on two languages, English and German. I was an active student in the University of Calabria, being a helpful mediator for some foreign students who needed to learn Italian language. With my previous knowledge and experience, I am confident to have the necessary requirements to apply for this program.
My interest in choosing this M.A. is due to the fact I wish to dedicate my life to communication: I mean I want to become a translator to allow people to express their own thought and knowledge to the other. I strongly believe that translation, to qualify as such, must be clear and as close as possible to the speaker's thought, but it has to bring different cultures together too. Thus I consider the translation as a knowledge that can serve to draw near stories, people and cultures, by giving due weight to words and to individuals.
I've always kept involved in some in many events about linguistics and philology: an international conference about hate speech in translation helped me a lot to prepare my Bachelor's Thesis "Hatred as perlocution. Hate speech in Ordinary Language Philosophy". Through the basic theories of language philosophy and behavioral psychology, I've paid particular attention to some cases of communicative violence, documented by written testimonies. With this survey, I mean to raise awareness of a topic that any interlocutor fully faces and also to encourage a more responsible use of language.
Another activity that improves my communications skills time after time is my hobby as journal contributor, which also helps me to keep in touch with cultural events and to satisfy my passion for writing and reading. My interest in communication activities was not only expressed during my university career, but also in my high school years. I took part in the school newspaper as writer and camera operator, a proactive group experience that led me to understand that what I wish for my future is to communicate to others and for others.
When I started my university career, I chose English and German as languages of specialization, a decision that was led by my strong interest for germanic languages. This interest grew up during my high school years: I had been studying here English, Spanish and French, but I became aware that another language was missing, so I decided to keep the knowledge of these three languages and to add up German in my university career as second language of specialization. So I took three exams in English Language and Translation, three exams in German Language and Translation, an exam in French and another in Spanish.
Although my bachelor degree final grade is 104/110, the marks of some exams allowed me to obtain university scholarship. In fact my GPA was 27 out of 30 (Italian grades are expressed by a minimum of 18 and a maximum of 30). My good academic achievements are due to the fact I love my university career, especially those subjects concerning translation and linguistics.
With the above, and my family support, I have now the opportunity to study abroad, and Ireland would be for me the perfect place. I know this country thanks to the previous experiences of some of my relatives, who had an interesting cultural experience in Dublin in the first 2000s and told me about Irish welcoming communities and high-quality English Schools. In addition to experimenting translation skills, I hope to get involved in the local community and in cultural events. Who knows, I also hope for a future PhD, that would mean a lot to me.
By revising what I have written, I realize that I have gone beyond the typical short-sentence-structure of written English. I therefore hope that this letter will prove useful both for your evaluations and for improving my skills in this regard.
Thanks a lot for reviewing my application. I look forward to your acceptance.
Best regards,
Francesca surname.
