00 00 The story “Guests of the Nation,” by Frank O’Connor depicts the difficulties faced by the soldiers, of the English and the Irish, in the middle of a war. The story starts with two English prisoners, Hawkins and Belcher, captured by a small group of Irish rebels. During captivity, the prisoners and the Irish soldiers live together in a way if they are not part of the war. They were all staying in a house owned by an old woman. The narrator, Bonaparte, and his comrade, Noble become good friends with the two English prisoners. Jeremiah Donavan, the third Irish man, stays away from their company and seriously performs his duty. The story moves towards action when on a particular evening Donavan tells Bonaparte that the Englishmen are not just prisoners but hostages and that they would be executed if the English harmed the Irish prisoners. For Bonaparte, this news was worse than a shock because by then he had developed affection with his English friends. The story reaches its climax when the English executes their Irish prisoners. In response, Donovan orders his comrades to prepare Hawkins and Belcher for execution. At that moment, many arguments take place between allegiances to once country or friendship. The falling action takes place with the execution of Hawkins and Belcher. In the end, Bonaparte and Noble consider this execution against their humanity and friendship. 0-
