Please correct this sentence.

Hello Friends,

Could someone please let me know whether the below sentence is correct or not.

As I had been working on a critical problem till two days ago I picked up your problem yersterday.

You suggested that I could also say "I worked.." But I believe that the event in the first clause occured before the event in the second clause, so it should be past perfect (the first clause) instead of simple past. I am just wondering that whether your suggestion can be considered an example of "Tense simplification" or not.

As I had been working on a critical problem, I was not able to [begin work on / take up / deal with / consider / handle / resolve] your problem until yesterday.

(picked up your problem seems unidiomatic to my ear.)
