Historical , political and other Considerations about the play of Julius Caesar
The historical considerations : The historical period of the action of Julius Caesar is from February 44 B.C. to 42 B.C-nearly two years and three quarters .The main events of this period to which allusion is made in the play , and their respective dates , were : The Lupercalia , Caesar's refusal of the crown , Caesar's murder, Caesar's funeral and the arrival of Octavius at Rome then the battles of Philippi .
Sir. A.W. Verity comments on the time of the play's action ; he says that the events of Julius Caesar are supposed to happen on six days, separated by intervals ;the arrangement being as follows: Day I: Act I , Scene 1 and 2 . February 15,44. (Interval.) Day II: Act I, Scene 3. March 14,44. Day III: Acts II and III. March 15, 44. (Interval .) Day IV: Act IV, Scene 1. November , 43. (Interval.) Day V: Act VI, Scene 2 and 3. (Interval.) Day VI: Act V. October , 42.
In several points Shakespeare has compressed the action , combining events which were really separated by some interval of time; the matter which supports that Shakespeare cancels some historical events in Caesar's life to form the plot ,so the centrality of Caesar could be affected by Shakespeare's attempt to build the structure of the play. It will be unfair to judge Caesar's role just by using Shakespeare's play.
Sir. A. W. Verity comments also in its historical truth . He finds out that in certain details Shakespeare has found it necessary to sacrifice historical accuracy; but substantially the play is true to history and give a vivid picture of the period and crisis with which it deals. So, it's possible to miss some points and sides in Caesar's life . The political considerations : The political condition in England is a main reason behind writing this play. The Queen of Elizabeth ,who didn't get married and had no children , had refused to name a successor the matter which increases Shakespeare's anxiety and worry about the political future of England after the death of the queen. So, he writes Julius Caesar which reflects the dangers of the civil war which comes as a result of the struggle upon authority .
Shakespeare may portray the character of Caesar according to his own reading to the political situation in England. Dr. Albert Harold says that Shakespeare is on of those writers who support the queen Elizabeth ,so he chooses to portray Caesar as the most honorable character in Rome .By using Dr. Harold's argument ; it's possible to say that Shakespeare prefers to focus on the behaviors of other characters to offer a positive view of Caesar ; moreover, Shakespeare insists to keep audience's sympathy towards Caesar . So, the brief appearance of the Caesar in the play is intentionally because Shakespeare aims to keep him as a central and honorable leader who was a victim of betrayal of his ambitious assistants .
The title of the play :
Sir. A.W. Verity thinks that Brutus is the '' hero'' of Julius Caesar , the character who stands out most prominently in its action. Caesar himself appears in only three scenes, nor in these dose he present an impressive figure . Yet the play is rightly called Julius Caesar , not Brutus, for the personality of Caesar is the real motive- spring of the whole plot , and the influence which creates and dominates the action. The tragedy is wrought round Caesar: Caesar murdered and Caesar avenged : and though in the external working out of the plot Brutus, Cassius and Antony all play more conspicuous parts than the dictator, yet he overshadows them as with majesty of a presence unseen but not unfelt. Caesar is the inner , inspiring cause of the whole drama- of the later scenes no less than of the earlier, for death really serves to intensify his power – and he is alone indispensable to it. So, because of his centrality Shakespeare chooses to name the play with his name.
This section uses some political , historical and other considerations to support the idea of the centrality of Caesar. Shakespeare changes some details especially in the chronology of the events of the play ; the matter which leads to say that there are some important details related to his central role are missed . The political condition of England affects the character of Caesar because Shakespeare prefers to gain audience support to people who have authority then gives the English a sign about the possible danger of the civil war. The title of the play give a clear evidence about Caesar central role in the play .
