Please correct this. Do you think the underlined part is correct grammatically?

Hi. I was glad when you came up to me and told me that your birthday is on this coming Thursday. One thing I wasn't sure was whether I should take it to suggest I should be shopping for a gift or not (ha, ha). By the way, if you had told me about your birthday a few days earlier, I would have been able to give you a fabulous gift that I had received from someon I knew. Instead it was sent to congratulate Jim's graduation from his high school. Anyway, I hope you grow up to be a fine gentleman in possession of character and humility. Try not to neglect your school work. Doing your best in school will help you to succeed in life and going to a good college or university should be on top of your prorities. Oh, one other thing. I heard you have been talking to your mother about taking a year or two off from school to travel around Europe and I suggest you think about it hard. I am not asking you not to go but I think an action like this deserves serious thoughts on your part.

Yes. And the "Oh!" is optional, though it emphasizes the suddenness of the thought.

And another thing.
