Today, I was riding the subway no. X heading to XXX Market when I heard a harmonica playing. There was a thin man with his shoulder slightly drooped downward and he had a white plastic cane in his hand and was coming toward my direction in an even tempo... never out of step. He had a woven plastic basket in his hand. The subway was crowded but he seemed to manage his way through. Everyone I see seemed trying hard not to look at him or acknowledge his being there ... seemed to wish he would go to another section where he wouldn't be seen. He seemed like an object of irritation rather than a object of sympathy. He was about five steps away from me and I was looking at him. I was busy thinking about whether I should give money to him when he comes close. "How much should I give him? Should I give some change or a bill? If I give a bill, I will not be able to buy a big fat sandwich and a drink and that wouldn't be good for me. But to give some change?" As these thoughts ran through my mind, I noticed he was beside me already. "Should I give him something now?" Then, I took comfort in a thought that no one I gave any money and thought, "why should I?" There went a chance to help someone... I thought. I later thought that I could have spared some change without putting an undue burden on myself
