Please correct the following sentences

'Having good spoken English is important because it gives me an edge in competing with others at school and at work in the future'
I'm not sure if 'with others at school and at work in the future' is correct
What I'm tyring to say is: others at school - your classmates (You're currently a student)
others at work in the future: ('others' include your future co-workers and e.g. the candidates who are competing for the same job with you etc)
Any better way to express these ideas? Thanks!

I believe if doesn't sound natural/make sense to say 'at school and at work in the future' following '....in competing with others.......'? This explains why you've rephrased the last bit of the passag

As far as your posted question is concerned, there is really no right or wrong; rather, it is more of a matter of semantics in my opinion. We can write anything within the boundary of grammar, but it is how it sounds to the audience that makes the difference.
