00Sneaking into the Fashion Institute’s career center building was the smartest decision I made in the summer 1996. Since it was accessible to only students, I needed a clever way to get to the second floor to view a resourceful bulletin board with good entry-level positions. That hot afternoon the strict campus security guard was ruling her station with an iron fist and was not letting anyone pass without a college id. As I was exiting the building from my failed attempted pass the guard, something miraculous happened. The beautiful blue skies suddenly turned black and the concrete under my feet vibrated from the shock waves of the thunder. Without any warning, sheets of water poured down from the clouds and soaked everything in its path. Then a huge tide of students charged through the doors and I drifted with the current until I passed the guard and reached the elevators. When I found the bulletin board, for three hours I meticulously read each typed, lined, white index cards and copied a list of entry-level graphic design positions into my worn spiral notebook. Then I came across Hampton Industries, a men’s apparel manufacture, seeking a graphic designer. Once I returned home that afternoon, I sent my resume and a few weeks later I was called for an interview. Even though I had no educational or professional training in graphic design, they were impressed with my drive and I was offered a temporary freelance position. Determined to prove my value, I was the first to arrive every morning and the last person to leave at the end of a long 12-hour day. My workday would continue at home until two to three in the morning because I would take projects home. One day when I returned to the office the following morning my computer was shut off. This would have not been a problem if I had ever learned how to turn it on or off. But what made my coworkers eyes pop out of their heads and burst out laughing was the day when they discovered that I never was away from my computer long enough to learn where the kitchen or bathroom were located, after a month of working at Hampton. So they were not surprised to see that my dedication and shrewd ability to maximize opportunities had paid off and that I was hired as a permanent fulltime Graphic Designer. 0-
