Le concert a en effet été décidé au dernier moment, après une polémique déclenchée par Bob Geldof, organisateur de «Live 8» et de «Live Aid» il y a vingt ans, qui a déclaré qu’il fallait des «grands noms de la musique internationale, en terme de popularité et de vente, pour attirer le maximum de téléspectateurs», justifiant ainsi la faible participation d’artistes africains. Après quelques réactions indignées, deux concerts supplémentaires ont été organisés, à St-Austell en Angleterre avec les grands noms de la musique africaine (Youssou N’Dour, Angelique Kidjo), et le concert de Johannesburg qui a rassemblé des artistes sud-africains, zambiens mais aussi sénégalais et malien (Oumou Sangaré et «Orchestre Baobab»).02br
