Le concert a en effet été décidé au dernier moment, après une polémique déclenchée par Bob Geldof, organisateur de «Live 8» et de «Live Aid» il y a vingt ans, qui a déclaré qu’il fallait des «grands noms de la musique internationale, en terme de popularité et de vente, pour attirer le maximum de téléspectateurs», justifiant ainsi la faible participation d’artistes africains.
