Grammar

Please correct my statement.

#1. An application for joining in/at the next class.

Which one is correct?

#2.1. I could not join at the last class.
#2.2. I have never joined at the last class.

My 1st question is that, Does (2.1) make any sense in an application?
And which one is more accurate for application.
Thanks in advance everyone.

1. An application to join at the next class.

(I'm assuming a course of classes.)

(2.1) makes sense.

(2.2) isn't right. "I have never..." is used for something that you might potentially have done on arbitrary multiple past occasions (e.g. "I have never eaten crocodile" or "I have never visited Australia"). In this case you are mentioning one specific past occasion

Thanks GPY, As far as I know, "could" is only about imagine.eg. If I had money, I could help you. so how can I use 'could' for certain past. I think, "I could not join at the last class" is about imagine. How can I meke my sentence in past with 'could'. Please remove my confusion.

"I could not join at the last class" = I was not able to join at the last class.

In this sentence, "could" is simply the past tense of "can". There is no hypothetical ("imagining") or conditional element to the meaning.
