please correct my sentence

We were running two abreast. [From the cambridge dictionary] --- the use of `two' behind abreast sounds odd to my ear.

please tell me why have the `two' been/have been the `two' used in the sentence?

Is there any word to replace the `behind'(bold one)? because I think the `behind' does not fit in my sentence.

Also help me to choose the correct option which I have separated by a slash(/).

Please tell me why the word 'two' has been used in the sentence.

The word two is 'before' or 'in front of' the word abreast.
