It is also noticeable that the ending figure for UK residents doubled that for overseas visitors.
As regards the second graph, France was the leading country with more than 10 million visits in 1999, closely followed by Spain with approximately 8 million tourists. On the contrary, USA, Greece and Turkey were the least popular destinations. Particularly, a mere 4 million British people travelled to the USA while there was only 3 million vistors to Greece. Turkey ranked the lowest with just 2 million – about one-fifth of the total number of tourists to France.
