Essay & Composition Writing

Please correct my essay for Task 2.

In many countries, very few young people read newspapers or follow the news on TV. What do you think are the causes of this? What solutions can you suggest?

Based on the available data, the audience of television news broadcast and readers of newspapers are dwindling in numbers particularly among the young people. I completely believe that this can be attributed to the popularity of the internet and I think there are a myriad of ways to address this.

Currently, young people prefer the internet over newspaper and television. This is because it offers a variety of things that other platforms cannot provide such as the delivery of news almost in real-time. What is happening in Baghdad, for example, can be reported by a local on online forums and it can be read by someone in the US. This is a feat that newspapers and television cannot probably duplicate due to logistical and financial limitations. Another point to consider is that the internet and social media sites appeal to the millennial more than the traditional sources of news and information because they find the latter tedious and dreary.

There are two possible solutions to tackle the issue of deteriorating tv viewership and newspaper readership. The use of language which young people speak and the hiring of popular celebrities that the teenagers can identify with can probably help boost their ratings. In Norway, for example, a media giant hired a popular celebrity for their prime time news broadcast and subsequent data showed that ratings went up. The same thing happened when New York Times adapted modern language and slang in their articles, its sales skyrocketed.

To conclude, I believe that the internet has had a massive negative effect on newspapers and television and the use of modern language and hiring celebrities are the possible ways to solve the decreasing number of young people taking interest on newspapers and news on TV.
