The majority of news being reported is bad news such as wars, famines, accidents and crimes.
Why do you think that is?
Do you think the news should be a balance of both good and bad news.
It has been observed that most of the news being presented by several media entities nowadays are those covering atrocity, poverty, criminality and the like. In my opinion, this development is mainly due to the fact that such stories are appealing to the public. However, I believe that reporters and journalists should present a right balance of positive and negative stories in their news reports.
In my opinion, the predominant reason behind the rise of negative news is that they are the stories that sell. Such news reports deliver high viewership and readership to TV news programs, broadsheets and tabloids. As a result, media companies are able to increase their profitability through advertisement. For instance, for decades, the Daily Mail has been able to maintain the interest of the British people by presenting stories related to wars, accidents and scandals. Because of this, several companies advertise on it, and its income has steadily increased for the past few years. In other words, negative news is financially advantageous to media companies.
However, reporters and journalists should present a right balance of positive and negative stories in their news reports. This is because they should be unbiased in their news delivery and should not be controlled by anyone in power or anything such as profit. It is their responsibilty to present both positive and negative news to the public. For example, Readers' Digest magazine has been promoting sad stories as well as inspirational stories in its publications for years. The editor, in one interview, said that as journalists, they are obligated to write stories of triumphs and failures for the benefit of their readers.
In conclusion, many media companies are driven by profit; hence, they are more focused on negative stories rather than positive stories. I suggest that there should be a healthy balance of good and bad news simply because good journalism demands it.
