Hallyu refers to the wave of popularity of Korean pop culture that began in Asia in the late 1990s. The term “hallyu” began to be used in Taiwan, China, and Korea, as Korean pop culture became known. Since then, hallyu has spread throughout the world. Especially since 2000, not only the preference for Korean popular cultures such as dramas, songs, and movies, but also the ideal preference for Korean products such as kimchi and home appliances has emerged. In a broad sense, all these phenomena are referred to as hallyu.

However, there are some problems caused by hallyu. First, if you look at various sources about hallyu, they often provide incorrect information. For example, the sentence “The term "hallyu" was first coined by the Chinese media in the early 2000s.” is inaccurate. This is because discussions and researches on the causes and etymology of hallyu have not been conducted properly. Second, hallyu, which is aimed at economic profit, has led to the emergence of anti-hallyu in China and Japan. There were attempts to invest huge amounts of budget and resources, and create theme parks under the name of continuing hallyu, by the government, local governments, and related companies. However, hallyu, which is aimed at economic profit, eventually subsided since the mid-2000s, with fewer tourists.

In order to solidify hallyu's position, accurate information on hallyu is needed. If people all over the world have misunderstandings about hallyu, it may lead to a debate over it. Therefore, we need to know hallyu exactly and let people around the world know. Also, it is necessary to minimize government intervention. Ironically, in the beginning of hallyu, the government did not intervene because the government did not know hallyu well, so hallyu was able to succeed. If the government takes a lead in hallyu which started amid this natural trend, it could place more emphasis on economic aspects, or other countries might protest to protect their own culture, like the cases mentioned above.

Hallyu has certainly helped to promote Korea to the world, but the negative effects of hallyu cannot be overlooked. Therefore, we must take steps to help hallyu move in a better direction.
