Thank you.

To find how I decided to be a diplomatic officer, I have to go back to the past, when I was 8 years old.

At that time, I met a totally genuine friend. Of course, it came to me as an amazing thing to meet her. Soon, I became her best friend. One day, I asked her.

“What is your dream?”
“My dream is to be a diplomatic officer.”

Though, I didn’t know what exactly it was, so, I asked my mom.

“Mom, my friend Ji-Ae told me that she wants to be a diplomatic officer. It’s my first time to hear such a thing. What is diplomatic officer?”

“Um, in plain language, diplomatic officer is a job that represents one’s nation.”
“Aha! But, what do they do? ”
“They work all around the world to promote their national interest.”
“Does that mean that they travel all around the world?”
“Yes, they have to.”
“If that’s true, I’ll be a diplomatic officer! That would be a wonderful job!

From that time, I decided my dream to be a diplomatic officer just to travel across all around the world. What a childish idea! I cannot help laughing at the absurd idea.

As I grew a little older, I started to reconsider of my dream seriously.
That’s because, I thought that I had no sincerity in my dream.
That is to say, “Becoming a diplomatic officer just to travel all around the world” is not a suitable reason for my dream.

Nonetheless, curiously enough, I still wanted and dreamed of becoming a diplomatic officer However, the main problem was that I had no idea why I still had to be and wanted to be a diplomatic officer In brief, I desired it but I didn’t know why.

It was the series of wandering. Of course, I know that it’s funny to compare that time as the chain of wandering. But, at that time, I was totally serious.
I kept thinking about it over and over.

“Why? Why do I have to be a diplomat?”
“I want it. But, I don’t know why.”

At last, I found the reason why I have been desired it.

“I found it! I wanted to be a diplomat because it offers me lots of opportunities to learn things freely.”

I wanted to learn lots of things freely. And I wanted a job that could give me those kinds of opportunities.

As my dream became clear, I started as much effort to step nearer to my dream.
Of course, I studied very hard. I continued my studies even when I was in grade 6.

By the age of 13, an inevitable question came to my mind, whether it is fine just to concentrate on my studies. I felt like something was missing in my studies. But, I wasn’t able to find what that’ is.
At last, I found what I wanted.

“That’s right! I have to be familiar with my nation! That was the missing one. But, why do I think that I need to be familiar with it?”

I kept thinking of the reason.

“Why? Why? Why?”
“Oh, yes! That’s right. I have to be familiar with my nation because I want to be this nation’s diplomatic officer!”
“If I became familiar with my nation, it would motivate to realize my dream!”

Sure enough, I started working on researching about my nation, Korea.
The thing that I concerned much about Korea is its national brand value.

In my opinion, I believe this made me to decide my dream.
I searched for the recognition of Europeans to South Korea.
I was totally shocked by the recognition of Europeans to South Korea.
They were unforgettable things for me.

In reality, a large number of Europeans don’t know where South Korea is, and some of them were confused of North Korea and South Korea.

When someone ask them “What do you usually think when you hear ‘Korea’?”
And they said they usually think of Korea as a belligerent country. Some of them believe that Korea is a poor country, and that the reason why Korea is aided from international donors and developed countries.
According to statistical data, Americans associate Korea with Korean War, Communism, poverty, instability and protest.
I felt dejected after I aware of their understandings.

However, it helped me to find the reason why I really have to be a diplomat.
I said to myself.

“I will be a diplomatic officer. I want to help the foreigners to have correct understandings of my country, South Korea. To realize it, South Korea should be in a superior position in the world. If I became a diplomat, I will help South Korea to be there, and work on spreading affirmative understanding of South Korea to foreign countries!”

Since then, I have been working on to realize my dream as a diplomatic officer, who promotes South Korea’s national interest and brand value.

Like a tempered glass that I mentioned above, I never collapse. Because, I have definite goals and that makes me strong.

Thank you.
