Testing the human spirit.
From Marie Clairie February, 2001 by jane Marie Franklyn.
Testing the human spirit is about a person called Aliy Zirkle who is 30 years old and is a musher. She is the youngest of her kind (being an musher that is) and is the only woman who have won the Yukon Quest which is a 1000mile musher race across frozen terrain. She has a very close bond with her group of huskies and her house is specially designed so she can see her dogs from almost every room of her house. But she says that she has no favorite among the dogs, and loves them all equally. She thinks the key to her success is that she sees her dogs as "buddies" instead of business partners as many of the mushers do, as she tells that she one time she fell asleep while still moving and her lead dog Pedro kept the sled from not crashing.
She moved from Pennsylvania in the early 90's to work as biologist the US Fisheries and Wildlife Service. Her only transport was a uncomfortable noisy snowmobile, and she thought "there must be a better way to travel". So she bought 6 dogs and learned to mush. She then later moved to Two Rivers a musher's heaven where she later decided to compete with her rag-tag huskies, and after a while, turned professional. She tells about all the obstacles in and how dangerous it could be if you fall asleep while still moving or go over thin ice and it breaks. I have to trust them with my life she says.
The journalist asks her why she push herself to such limits. She says "it's about testing the human spirit" On the side of the mushing, she is a bartender which is her social outlet. "I can't imagine doing anything else I cant imagine leaving Alaska and my buddies it's a silly addiction I cant break"
Response:
I can understand the idea of challenging yourself all the adrenalin and so on. But me personally wouldn't do it for 2 million dollars. The idea of cold is just terrible in my opinion. It would be more fun If you could mush on sand beaches or the desert. That would be awesome!
