Please confirm whether the following right !

Please confirm whether or not both are right in grammar.
1)She was a retired doctor.
2)The man retired yesterday is my friend.

I think both are right but someone is insisting the second one is wrong without giving me any suitable explanation.

Couldn't you confirm it ? If his words is right, please teach me why the second one is wrong.

Ah~ Thank you so much. I thought I could omit "who was" because it looked like containing a relative pronoun. I mean I thought I could make the verb of "retire" a form of passive voice. But I can't make it like that.Right ? Thank you so much.
