Please compare these 2 sentences

Please compare these 2 sentences and tell me which one is gramatically correct. Please explain to me why. Thank you.

Sentence 1: Perhaps the reason why I underestimated this module was because I never thought of it in a particular context, and in this case, education.

Sentence 2: Perhaps the reason why I underestimated this module was having never thought of it in a particular context, and in this case, education.

No. Your first sentence is not wrong from the viewpoint of grammar. It's better to say that it doesn't conform to the usual recommendations for good usage, which is more a matter of style than of grammar. ... reason ... is/was ... because ... is not considered good usage.

I see. But personally, I would never using this pattern. As CJ suggested, perhaps it can be revised with a "that" clause.

i.e.

Perhaps the reason why I underestimated this module that I never thought of it in a particular context, and in this case, education.
