Overpopulation of urban areas has led to numerous problems.
Identify one or two serious ones and suggest ways that governments and individuals can tackle these problems. (500 words)
In this day and age, there is no doubt that the booming population in urban areas on account of technological advancement, immigration, better facilities, and lacking family planning has been a hotly-debated issue all over the world. Rick Leblanc (2018) anticipated that the rapid growth of population will be probably out of reach of the planet to support it, as well as be more challenging for individuals and the government to address. Thus, it goes without saying that a large number of downsides are brought about by overpopulation is one of the most crucial problems facing us today.
The initial point worth noting is the series of adverse effects on the environment that overcrowding exerts municipal areas. According to https://www.thoughtco.com/doris-lin-127487 (2019), it is obvious that Europe, Japan, the Soviet Union, and other rich nations are encountering over pollution owing to their massive contributions to the carbon dioxide buildup in the atmosphere. Additionally, congestion is also strongly believed to be associated with over-populated nations since not only can exhaust fumes from numerous vehicles do more harm than good for nature but it also considerably increases the high risk of respiratory diseases such as asthma and lung cancer.
Another factor to consider is the alarming rate of unemployment as the overcrowding has been uncontrollably rising. The number of jobless people will come up to million people worldwide, which will inhibit the development of metropolitan nations; thus, people probably face social isolation, low self-esteem, family breakdown, and depression (Marina Ahmed, 2018). Also, it is asserted that individuals who are underemployed, not socially accepted or jobless are most likely to commit a crime. In general, keeping up with the population explosion is considered as one of the most toughest issues nowadays.
On top of that, when it comes to bare necessities of life such as food, water and housing, it becomes difficult to cater to the ever-growing requirements of an overpopulated nations. Due to the humans’ excessive need, they are heavily involved in cutting down forests, hunting wildlife in a reckless manner, and causing pollution; therefore, exhaustible natural resources like arable land, fossil fuels, and water continue to drop sharply. For example, the irresponsible cutting of trees to facilitate the housing needs of a large population takes away the habitat of hundreds of plants and animals. Importantly, around 15 percent of the world's population lived in "water-stressed" regions in 2016, and the amount has been projected to reach 50 percent by 2030 (Rick Leblanc, 2018, p.1).
Thus, the government must take implement measures to mitigate these adverse impacts such as encouraging people to use eco-friendly products, enacting strict punishment for those who intentionally do harm to the environment, expanding awareness among people about family planning and introducing suitable policies to curb the growth rate of the population. For individuals, only by taking responsibility to educate themselves and those around them about the severe influences of the population boom do they make effective use of birth control methods and successfully co-operate with the government to control overpopulation.
In conclusion, people are living in the age when many of them are neglecting the potential drawbacks of after-effects that overcrowding causes in metropolitan areas in terms of environment, supplies, and unemployment. Thus, it is abundantly demonstrated that government actions and changes in the ways people live are urgently needed.
