Cancer has been reported the most common cause of death in Thai people for the last five years. Among several causes of cancer, occupational and environmental factor is the hot issue for Thai people. Many people want to know the risks of cancer in their jobs and how to protect or avoid them. Unfortunately, because of the industrialization of my country, lots of people have to work in the working environments that have no guarantee for their health and they may be exposed with a number of carcinogens. Epidemiology is one of the tools that can improve public health, especially occupational and environmental health, and can answer this interested topic of occupational cancer in my country. Furthermore, I am eager to do research in occupational cancer, so knowledge of epidemiology can fulfill my career plan. Fortunately, I have known about an International Asian Symposium and Workshop on Occupational Cancer that will be held in December 11-13, 2008 in my country and the name of ...................from Institute for Risk Assessment Science, , a speaker in assessment of occupational exposures topic, has caught my eye. Then I searched in the internet and discovered that your postgraduate program in Epidemiology, specialized track in occupational and environmental epidemiology, is an ideal fit for my ambitions. Your master program in Epidemiology is an International Prestige Master program that means if I have a chance to study and do research in your program, I will be closely involved in the research activities of many internationally acclaimed research groups. Moreover, I looked on your courses and found that many courses that your program offers will be a perfectly match with my fields of interest such as exposure assessment, modern methods in data analysis and occupational and environmental epidemiology. I am very fortunate to do my master thesis relevant to occupational cancer. The title of my thesis is “Occupational risk factors of Nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Thailand” and it is a part of project called “Risk factors of Nasopharyngeal carcinoma in ” which is co-operated with International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Owing to my case-control study thesis, I used job categories as exposures and incident cases as outcomes, and found that this type of exposure data was not as accurate as other types. This gave me the impetus needed to pursue deep knowledge of epidemiology, especially occupational epidemiology.
After received Doctor of Medicine (MD) and doing my internship in provincial hospital, I worked as a medical staff at . I had the great opportunity taking short course in cancer epidemiology with ................from IARC in 2005. With my interest in occupational cancer, I decided to participate in residency training program in occupational and environmental medicine and master program in occupational medicine. At the present time, I am in the last year of residency training and will graduate in April 2009. After graduation, I have to come back to working as a medical staff and a chief of technology transfer and academic supporting division that has to supervise cancer research unit. If I have an opportunity to study in your program, I plan to conduct research in cancer epidemiology and occupational and environmental cancer. Furthermore, I will share my experiences and knowledge with my colleagues in the association of occupational and environmental diseases of Thailand and national cancer and regional cancer centers. In addition, I will be a lecturer of residency training program in occupational and environmental medicine and master program in occupational medicine.
Finally, I am really convinced that the opportunity to attend your university, and my potential and perseverance, will strongly prepare me to excel in all my future endeavors. I firmly believe my graduate studies at your esteemed university will shape me as a research professional with social responsibility. Please review my CV for other value adding information. I would be grateful for your consideration of my candidacy for this program.
Yours sincerely,
