Please clear my doubt. was = is

Hi all,

1)He gave me a pen. His name is Jack.
2)He is the tallest boy in the class.

3)The boy who gave me a pen was called Jack.
4)The boy who gave me a pen was the tallest boy in the class.

I have used 'was' instead of 'is' after the relative clause.
Does 3 suggest 1 and
4 suggest 2?

Thank you

Hi goat,

That's a very good question and if one wants to be on good terms with the grammar rules the simple-past 'gave' makes you use the simple-past 'was'. Strickly speaking, the boy gave you a pen in the past and at that time, in the past, he was the tallest and his name was Jack. To avoid such a confusion of describing someone who has given ['gave' in the 3) and 4)] you a pen and who

It does to me.

The boy who gave me a pen was called Jack.
suggests (in the sense that I would certainly conclude the following)
He gave me a pen. His name is Jack.

I doubt he changed his name since giving me a pen, even if the pen-giving happened many years ago.
