The bar chart compares the actual and expected populations of three different cities, namely Jakarta, Sao Paolo and Shanghai between 1990 and 2000.

It is clear that the population was expected to increase in all three cities over the period shown but that prediction was true for only 2 out of 3 cities. Sao Paolo was by far the most populated of the three cities.

In 1990, Jakarta was home to around 8 million people, which was two-third of Shanghai’s population with and almost half the figure for Sao Paolo. Jakarta was predicted to see a 3-million increase in its population over the next 10 years but in fact, it expericed a more significant increase of 5 million, to 13 million people in 2000.

By contrast, while Shanghai’s population was predicted to slightly decline to 11 million people in 2000, actually it rose significantly to 15 million. The population of Sao Paolo was expected to increase by 4 million people over the 10-year period. However, in reality it increased almost twice as high as that figure, to roughly 25 million in 2000.
