Please check this for me.

Hi teachers. Please check this for me. Is it fine? Is "instead" logical to use where I have used it?

He got up, went to the fridge, and opened it, but it was empty. Instead he noticed a flier from a pizzeria on the fridge door.

The word 'instead' needs a slightly more explicit antecedent.

He got up, went to the fridge, and opened it, but there was no food. Instead he noticed a flier from a pizzeria, so that he could order some.
