The number of people working online from home has grown in some countries. What advantages and disadvantages can come to this trend?

The trend of working online is increasing day by day. In some countries, many people are allowed to work from home, and this phenomenon is increasing. Flexibility and strong relationships are the two main benefits of carrying out work from home; whereas, unpunctuality and absence of supervision are its two possible drawbacks.

The two primary benefits of this phenomenon are flexibility and strong relationships. That is to say that flexible hours of working allow people to spend considerable amount of time with their family members without thinking about work. Not only they feel motivated to work harder and put more efforts, but bonding in relations among family members also increases substantially. Google, for example, permits its employees to work from any part of the world. Since the implementation of this rule, the turnover of employees in Google has been reduced significantly.

Lack of supervision over employees and punctuality issues are its two main drawbacks. This is because people, who are permitted to work outside office, do job according to their convenience, and their supervisors are not able to guide them face-to-face. Although these employees usually have interaction over emails with their managers, face-to-face communication becomes an issue. As a result, unnecessary delay in tasks and unorganized work become a norm. For instance, Unilever permitted its senior employees of Pakistan to work from home in 2017, and its profitability declined in that year. The reasons were absence of employees and large errors in their daily production.

In conclusion, the primary advantages of allowing employees to work from are convenience and strong family relationships. Lack of supervision and unpunctuality are the two drawbacks which can cause difficulties for companies.
