Some people believe that government should take care of old people whereas others oppose this view.

Discuss both the views and give your opinion.

It is argued that the responsibility of taking care of old people lies with governments; whereas, many have the opposite view. In my opinion, governments should take this responsibility because of numerous reasons.

First, when these people were young and doing jobs or businesses, they paid income taxes to their states. The states used this money in running the country and did myriad of activities. Now, since they have become old and unable to contribute in generating a revenue for the country, the government should provide them with healthcare facilities. In China, for example, the medical treatment of retired persons is free in public hospitals. This is because they used to pay 30% of their income as taxes during their working life. Second, elderly people can guide the young generation in different things by sharing their useful experiences. In this way, the chances of making mistakes by young people will be reduced significantly. Australia, for instance, provide contractual jobs to people who get retirement so that they can provide consultancy in different projects.

Conversely, many believe that governments should not be responsible for providing healthcare facilities to old people. Instead, this should be the responsibility of their family members to take care of them. That is to say that these older people had supported their family members when they were young and able to work. It is now their turn to spend time with their elders and provide congenial environment. Besides, governments sometimes do not have enough budget and have other important tasks to perform, such as providing education and healthy environment to its citizens. Therefore, it is difficult for a government to spend a large amount on providing healthcare facilities. Take India for example. Where retired men and women lives with their families who take utmost care of them and hardly depend on governments.

In conclusion, governments should be responsible for providing healthcare to its old population, in my opinion. This is because these people have paid income taxes during their working life and can be a useful guide for young generations.
