Topic: It is too expensive to look after and repair old buildings. This money should be spent on modern buildings instead.
There is an argument that instead of repairing and maintaining old buildings, we should spend on modern buildings. I partially agree with this argument.
It is better to renovate modern buildings to enhance their worth instead of spending on old buildings. Buildings constructed long ago were generally designed to suit the lifestyle of the people at that time. But, as modern buildings fulfil the day- to-day and other important requirements of the people living now, they need more attention and care. For example, the design and the facilities of a hospital built five decades ago are highly unlikely to fulfill the requirements of medical practitioners and patients of today. Therefore, it will be prudent to augment the utility of the recently built hospital instead of repairing or maintaining the one built long ago.
On the other hand, every old building is not worth its maintenance and repair cost. Some bear testimony to the culture and heritage of the place. Mural paintings and architecture of some old buildings contain intriguing details of the social, cultural and political life of the people in the past. For example, The Empire State Building in the United States of America, constructed nearly seventy years ago, apart from having been the world tallest building till 2012, attracts around four million tourists every year. It has had a significant role in the political history of the country.
In conclusion, though it is very expensive to look after or repair old buildings, some deserve to be looked after with utmost care for the value they hold for the present and future generations. Nevertheless, when it is evident that an old building is not serving any purpose, instead of repairing it, it is better to strengthen a modern one.
