Some people prefer to live in a house, while others feel that there are more advantages to living in an apartment. Are there more advantages than disadvantages of living in a house compared with living in an apartment?

From studio apartments to farmhouses, there are different types of accommodation found around the world. While many of these coexist with each other across the world, different living spaces are popular in every city and, at times, each neighbourhood. Houses and apartments are among the most common types of housing across the world; while each has its merits and demerits, I believe that the advantages of living in a building outweigh those of a home.

Even when real estate prices skyrocket, apartments are more cost-effective than homes because their purchase does not entail the cost of the land they are built on. They generally also provide access to a host of facilities, including - but not limited to - laundry machines, parking spaces, garbage disposal provision and general maintenance. Their most important advantage, though, is the added security. Not only do most buildings have intercoms, alarms or security guards, but living in close proximity with your neighbours also provides a few more informal vigilant observers, who can alert you if they notice something suspicious.

When it comes to a private home, residents must often spend exorbitant amounts of money to avail of the same provisions. These are far from the only expenses, though - purchasing a home requires a significant amount of capital upfront, with even more needed to maintain the property over the years. Moreover, houses are not as close to neighbouring properties as apartments, which can make people feel isolated from their local community.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that houses are without their advantages. If you have the means to purchase them, a private property provides the kind of space that most apartments simply cannot. Homeowners also have a chance to customise their homes as much as they like, whereas options are relatively limited when it comes to flats. This is especially important for big families, whose members have specific requirements or desires.

All things considered, the best type of housing for a person comes down to their requirements and financial situation. In most cases, though, apartments have a clear advantage over homes, which do not foster as much of a sense of safety and community, have a higher carbon footprint, and are not easy on the pocket.
