Topic: People should follow the customs and traditions when people start to live in a new country. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Task
Many people argue that foreigners should adopt new customs and traditions when residing in another country. Personally, I totally agree with that.
On the one hand, it seems to be difficult for newcomers to blend into a new environment if they are not willing to conform to the norms of social behavior. For example, a businessman who moves to America and found his own company must be aware of the business practices of the host country. If not, his company will be at risk of bankruptcy soon. Moreover, the possibility to get involved in illegal acts is quite high when s person does not understand the practices of local people. In Singapore, for instance, people will be considered as impolite and ill-mannered for their bad behavior such as discharge rubbish or spit gum in public places.
On the other hand, there are numbers of benefits to gain when new residents adopt the customs and traditions. One advantage is the sense of belonging to a new place. Local people will welcome or invite people who show their respect for the local way of life to their homes to celebrate festivals like Christmas or Thanksgiving Day, which makes newcomers feel like they are in their own home. Another advantage is the richness of experiences which new residents can get from enjoying new cultures and lifestyles. Besides, they can also have opportunities to learn good manners from localities, such as be on time as Japanese or ask permission to smoke before lighting a cigar as American. Such kind of experiences and manners that a person gains from settling down in a new country will enable them to live in harmony with local people and receive respect from them.
In conclusion, it seems to me that when staying in a country that people are not from, it is important for them to observe and respect the customs practiced by the people who live there.
