Planting trees is very important for the environment. Some people says trees should be planted in the vacant areas of cities and towns, while other says housing facilities should be build instead. Do you agree or disagree?

Trees contribute considerably to the environment by reducing our carbon footprint. Because of this, a segment of society feels that the unused lots in the cities should be planted with trees. Some argue, however, that they should be developed for residential purposes instead. I believe that both recommendations are advantageous to society, and I suggest that governments need to find a healthy balance in terms of allocating urban areas to trees and residential facilities.

Firstly, planting trees in the vacant areas in the cities is indeed beneficial as far as fighting climate change is concerned. This is because trees and other plants absorb greenhouse gases that increase global warming. For example, in Astana, Kazakhstan, the local council decided to allocate a large portion of urban land to several species of trees and plants about 20 years ago. Today, the city is now reaping the benefit of such an initiative; Astana has been considered by experts as a model "green" city with one of the highest air quality in the world.

However, I would argue that environmental issues and the absence of trees in highly urbanized areas are not the only problems that need to be urgently addressed. Other matters, such as the lack of housing facilities should also be considered. Therefore, it is essential for local authorities to find the right balance between improving the environment and providing the people with a place to live. For instance, Singapore has been able to provide its inhabitants with adequate housing facilities as well as parks replete with trees and plants. Clearly, as exemplified by Singapore, both residential and environmental improvements can co-exist.

In conclusion, while planting trees is advantageous to the environmental condition of a city, I firmly believe that government authorities should be able to provide the citizens a right balance of housing facilities and "green" spaces.
