A government has a responsibility to its citizens to ensure their safety. Therefore, some people think that the government should increase spending on defense but less on social benefits. To what extent do you agree.

It is often argued that government's real duty in society is to protect the people from danger. In order to do this, a segment of society feels that a substantial amount of money should be dedicated by the government on defense and only a small fraction should be allocated on social benefits. I completely disagree with this opinion, and I believe that governments should find the right balance in terms of budget allocation on different government services.

Those who support that that the defense department should be given more priority by the government argue that by doing so, people would be safer than ever. This is because such a development will serve as a deterrent to crime, violence and even rebellion. For example, in Turkey, Prime Minister Erdogan decided to pour over $1 billion dollars into the country's department of defense for the acquisition of military weapons and equipment in 2017. According to his spokeperson, because of this move, the prime minister has able to quell rebellion and made the country a safe place for its citizen. Thus, to these supporters, focusing on defense is advantageous with regard to the safety of the citizens.

However, I would argue that other government services share equal importance for the country's development. Substantial outlays for literacy, health care and education contribute considerably to the progress of a nation. Focusing only on one area of the government like defense will result in imbalance and cause economic upheaval. For instance, for the past few decades, North Korea has been allocating most of its annual budget on its army and neglecting other functions of the government particularly social benefits. Many experts claim that this is the reason why the country remains poor and has the lowest human development index in the world. Therefore, ensuring that there is a healthy balance of all government services in a nation's budget is essential.

In conclusion, although defense is vital to a country, I believe other sectors should share equal proportion of a nation's budget to achieve healthy development of a nation.

Armed forces would be a better wording. The word army means what can be described as a land force or ground force in particular, in English.
