In the past, when students did a university degree, they tended to study in their own country.

Nowadays, they have more opportunities to study abroad.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this development?

On the contrary to the past, now students have more chances to study abroad rather than going to a university in their own country. But while it may have some benefits, I also think it may have some drawbacks.

Perhaps one of the major advantages is that students who study abroad become independent. This happens because they have to provide food, accommodation and money for themselves, therefore, they are ready to take responsibilities of life. In a survey conducted in the USA, it has been shown that international students have less dependency toward their families and their helps. What is more, these people become confident and will gain a higher self-esteem in confronting problematic issues since they have to face and overcome all the problems alone in a country with many differences from their home country. In the same study mentioned above, it was also illustrated that foreign students feel more confident in confronting and figuring out troublesome issues comparing to those who study in their own country.

There are, however, some disadvantages that cannot be denied. The main one, I believe, is that due to living in a new environment without knowing anyone, international students feel the absence of the warmness of being with their beloved families so they become homesick. For example, in a questionnaire distributed by researchers in one of the universities of Canada about the difficulties that foreign students have, it was revealed that almost all the international students ticked "Homesick" as the biggest challenge. The other problem, I think, is due to facing a new language and especially a new culture, these students become detached from the new society which in its turn it may cause loss of motivation of moving forward in their life or in their studies. As an example, in the same research explained earlier, due to the mentioned problem, nearly all foreign students had difficulties in focusing on their studies which occasionally caused them to fail some courses.

In conclusion, going abroad to study has its own two sides, therefore, it is important to weigh up the negative and positive points to make a wise choice.
