Nowadays, a lot of buildings, such as offices and schools, are now being built with an open plan design. Do you see this as a positive or negative development?
Recently, there has been an increase in co-working places, such as offices and schools. While I recognize the possible advantages, I consider this a negative development overall.
On the one hand, it is undeniable that open plan office space layout has merits. First of all, an enormous benefit is financial saving. This type of building seems to be a common trend, especially in metropolitan cities where the costs of office supplies are incredibly considerable. Open plan buildings would be highly economical regarding ground rent and utility costs. Besides, a single workplace also contributes to better social communication. It would be much more understandable when the staff exchanges the information face to face rather than through social media, and it is also more time-saving than moving from one cubicle to another. All these things lead to a smooth flow of work and an increase in work productivity.
On the other hand, I believe that one exposed floor plan is a negative improvement for various reasons. Firstly, when the employees work in the same space, it increases the risk of cross-contamination, especially infectious diseases. More specifically, during the COVID-19 pandemic, 5k messages require all citizens to keep a safe distance from each other and avoid mass gatherings; therefore, it is inevitable that this type of building is not proper or ideal. In addition, a noisy work environment is another contributor. One survey showed that 99% of employees reported that their concentration was impaired by various types of office noise, especially telephones left ringing at vacant desks and people talking in the background. This noise-related problem leads to staff frustration and fatigue, as also distractions.
In conclusion, despite the advantages, it has brought about many issues to be considered a positive trend.
