Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school.
Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
Nowadays, many experts claim that children should learn a foreign language when they are still at primary school rather than at secondary school. In my opinion, the trend of accessing a new language at the early age have more benefits than its drawbacks.
On the one hand, some people believe that children should wait until they are at secondary school to learn a foreign language. It is unnecessary to teach foreign language for young children at primary school. There are many basic subjects such as math, sciences and moral which are more essential for children than foreign language. These subjects can help to develop their logical thinking and form their positive personalities. Children at primary school are in the process learning their mother tongue so that learning simultaneously two languages can make them confused and distracted.
On the other hand, I argue that children should be taught foreign language at their young age. It has been proven that the earlier children learn languages, the better they achieve. Young children can easily remember vocabulary and pick up pronunciation better than older people. They are less embarrassed or shy so it would be easier and faster for them to learn a new language. Take myself as an example, when I was 7 I found it effortless to learn English. But now, at the age of 22, it seems very difficult for me to remember new words when I started learning the third language.
In conclusion, while learning a new language at primary school has some disadvantages for children, I strongly believe that the advantages are greater if parents and teachers follow children’s study closely.
