The pie charts illustrate how the six areas in the world used water for three purposes which are industrial, agricultural and domestic use.
Overall, the areas in Asia, Africa and South America used the majority of water for agriculture while it was mostly consumed for industry sector in the other areas. In addition, central Asia had the largest percentage of water consumption for agriculture whereas Europe ranked first in terms of consuming water for industry.
In terms of areas which focused on agriculture in Central Asia, South East Asia, Africa and South America, figures for agricultural use were 88%, 84%, 81% and 71% respectively. Small amount of water was used for industrial use with 10% in South America and 12% in South East Asia and the other two areas’ figures were all below 7% in the same category. Water consumption for residential use in South America was higher than the other areas with 19% for the former and less than 9% for the latter.
As for North America and Europe, the proportions of water used for industry were 48% and 53% respectively. Similar figures can be seen in domestic category with 13% for North America and 15% for the other region. Water used for agricultural sector in both regions made up good proportions, with 39% in North America, which was 7% higher than figure for Europe (32%).
