Language is one of the most effective tools to express thoughts to other people. Because of that, failure to achieve adequate proficiency in the host country’s language, a developed country specifically, can let foreigners be underestimated at workplaces. In another aspect, using inappropriate words or talking at a noticeably slow speed might be some reasons that cause them to be losers in transferring their ideas. Hence, the door to be involved in conversations and increase social integration with local friends would be narrower. Many disadvantages happen when expatriates have not been able to improve language acquisition might be one source that produces their negative feelings like loneliness, stress, depression and discrimination as a result.
Besides some big problems as above, people living far from their homelands like international students, foreign workers, or refugees can also struggle from everyday living. With great support from popular applications like Google Maps or Google Translate, part of nonnatives makes their day-to-day tasks such as getting directions, going shopping less difficult. However, they cannot rely on those programs entirely if their mother tongue languages have not been supported or there is no internet connection.
In conclusion, the acquisition of the host country’s language is crucial to foreigners when they do not want to face many issues that lead to failed integration. Being able to use the local language will increase social interaction with native-born people and prevent daily activities from becoming daunting tasks.
