TOPIC: In many countries around the world, life expectancy is increasing. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this situation and give your own opinion. (250 words)
There is an irrefutable fact that the world’s ageing process is accelerating day in and day out. Admittedly, this trend has its own pros and cons; however, I still advocate that the merits are dominant.
One obvious positive effect of longevity is that a longer retirement provides people with a wide range of opportunities to follow their favorite pursuits and enjoy life. It goes without saying that the senior citizens are given much more time to accomplish their goals and be involved in various hobbies like travelling or anything that makes them feel satisfied. In addition, living longer means possessing more valuable experiences in every aspect of life. Consequently, the elderly can share their wealth of knowledge to express their support for the younger generations.
Despite the aforementioned benefits, several drawbacks do exist. To begin with, a drastic increase in the lifespan of human puts a heavy burden on health systems. When people are in their sixties or seventies, they are more likely to suffer from chronic illnesses such as cancer or diabetes. This tendency leads to an increasing demand for frequent and long-term care. What’s more, the rapid rise in the size of older age groups causes the greying of workforce and a fall in productivity and growth. As life expectancy boosts, they government may struggle to meet a growing number of retired workers and pension commitments.
In conclusion, weighing up both sides of the phenomenon, although an ageing population may put pressure of healthcare services and pension schemes on the society, I believe that the upsides of it are completely more noticeable.
