some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary schools rather than secondary schools.

do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

It is argued that teaching a foreign language in primary schools is better than teaching it in secondary schools. In my opinion, its benefits far outweigh its drawbacks.

Perhaps, one of the most important advantages of learning a new language at an early age is that children are not occupied with things such as work, therefore, they have more time to spend on learning a new language. For example, in a survey about acquiring a foreign language, conducted in schools of Sweden, it has been shown that primary schoolers were more successful in learning English that secondary schoolers.

What is more, since primary schoolers are younger, their brains are fresher, so that they are more open in receiving new things. As a result, they can learn faster. For instance, a research which was done Switzerland on how fast kids in primary and secondary schools can learn a new language. It was shown that primary schoolers had a faster rate of learning than the other group.

There are, however, some drawbacks that cannot be denied. The main one, I think, is that due to their age, primary schoolers tend to get bored easily and want to play. So, learning a language should be fun for them. Another disadvantage is that if the teaching materials are not proper to the children's ages, it may cause them lose interest, so that, they are not willing to learn it. For example, it has been shown that if a grammar point is beyond comprehension of the kids, they do not try to learn it as it is not understandable to them.

Clearly, there are some negative aspects to teaching a new language in primary schools. However, with experienced teachers and a good class management, all that remains are positive points.
