An increasing number of professionals, such as doctors and teachers, are leaving their own poorer countries to work in developed countries.
What are the causes?
What solutions can you suggest to deal with this situation?
In last few years, thousands of highly qualified and trained people have emigrated from third wold nations to settle and work in first world countries. I strongly believe that this is due to the search for better life and this could be addressed by good governance and creation of more job opportunities in the native country.
Two main factors are behind the rising number of people leaving their country for greener pasture. The first one is the appealing wages of these professionals abroad. For instance, while an average doctor earns around $20,000 per year in Indonesia, this figure is more like $150,000 per annum in the US so that the idea of working overseas is indeed enticing. The second factor is the efficient government system most rich countries offer to these people. Since it is not uncommon for poor nations to be plagued by corruptions and red tape, it is also unsurprising why the educated citizens choose to move to another country.
Tackling the phenomenon of brain drain involves the overhaul of the entire bureaucracy. This needs to be done by first removing corrupt politicians in office. Singapore, for example, launched one such initiative in the 70s, when the Prime Minister jailed plunderers even those who were in power. Given the profound impact of such move in that country, it is worth expanding it to other developing nations. In addition to this, the government could use the money recovered from these thieves in funding job-generating projects, which may result in less people going abroad for work.
To conclude, unless efforts are made to address the issue of brain drain, this problem will only escalate. Government should take actions against corruption and create jobs for the people.
