What is "productive vocabulary" and what is "receptive vocabulary" are not fully understood. The former consists of words that people can use while the latter consists of words that people do not use. Normally, the number of passive vocabulary is larger than that of productive vocabulary. To make receptive vocabulary usable, people need to be exposed to it many times in subtly different contexts. The more one becomes fluent in a language, the faster and the easier they can use their passive knowledge. As regards the English language, although there is no pronounced difference between receptive and productive use to native speakers, the inverse is true for foreign language learners.
