Ever since I was a teenager, I liked to tinker with websites which gives you virtual money to invest in shares. It was my hobby, my passion and every time I made profit, it hooked me more and more into the game. It instilled in me a penchant for investments. I would find myself sitting in front of the computer every morning when the market bell rings, buying and selling shares till I used up every inch of my virtual money. It started growing in me and even before I knew it, I started investing with real money. Surely I made my share of loss, but the very appellation of making profit kept me glued to my seat for hours and hours at a stretch. It was then that I decided, this is what I want to do in life, this is what gives me happiness. It was clear; I wanted to become a portfolio manager. University of St. Gallen is exactly what I have been looking for. It provides opportunities to students that are a par above the rest. The university is very strategically and beautifully located in the most powerful and busiest economic centers of the world. Through my research I have learnt that Master of Arts in Banking and Finance is ranked 5th in the world by financial times. University of St Gallen enables you to become entrepreneurs in designing your course. The very appellation of the “St Gallen Symposium and the fellowship awards” piqued my curiosity about the institution. University of St. Gallen whilst giving me hands on experience in relevant field will enable me to specialize in financial markets, which will prepare me for a promising career in investment banking department, exactly where my true interest lies. Such opportunities will not only help me get a better understanding of the subject but also give me hands on experience in my prospective field. The opportunity of working while studying will vividly display the spectrum of talents that I have whilst demonstrating my love for the subject. It will play a crucial role in the making of my success. During my tenure in scientechnic and Lucy Switchgear FZE, I have worked as an intern in finance department under direct supervision of senior financial analyst of the company. I was involved in the preparation and analyzing of financial statements such as balance sheets, income statements etc. I also worked closely with the finance team to raise capital for financing of new projects. To ensure compliance with the budget, I assisted finance manager in monitoring of the company expenses. I also analyzed the monthly account receivables and payables. I believe that the Masters or arts in Banking and Finance require you to have strong insight in finance. I am a keen global markets enthusiast and keep abreast of the latest developments taking place by regularly reading the economic times, Financial Times and Bloomberg. My passion for finance, 8 months of relevant experience and preparation for CFA level 1 June, 2013 exam will give me an edge over others, to not only strive but ace in the competitive atmosphere of university of St Gallen. In my 3rd year at Bits, I was the captain of Bits Pilani Table Tennis team with a total of four members in the team. Under my captaincy, the Bits Pilani Table Tennis team has not lost even a single match. My leadership has always inspired the team to go beyond the obvious and achieve the goals. Because of my leadership skills, I was elected as the sports and cultural representative for 3rd year. I am also the executive member of the sports committee. I am also a part of my colleges organizing committee. I assisted the college in organizing events for various festivities, working closely with the college for getting sponsors for Bits Sports Festival, Inter College Cultural Events etc. This greatly polished and enhanced my people and communicational skills. I learnt that planning ahead of time is pre-requisite for organizing a successful event, and this means starting well in advance. I come from a varied cultural background. I did my schooling from Saudi Arabia and India and Engineering from Dubai. I did my first internship in Scientechnic which is a company based in Dubai and second internship in Lucy Switchgear FZE which is a company based in UK. During this time from schooling to engineering to internships, I met people from varied nationalities and this greatly enhanced my skills related to leadership and multi- cultural and multi- national environments. These diverse experiences have polished my quantitative aptitude and technical prowess, but the qualities that uniquely set me apart are my leadership attributes, inter-personal skills and the 'go-getter' attitude which the University of St Gallen can leverage for the benefit of the class. When I bring all this to the table, I can assert for a fact that, my experience, skill and attitude would be an asset for the next class of University of St Gallen. My short-term goal is to secure a job as an analyst at a bulge bracket investment bank or a consultant at one of the big four audit firms. My long term goal is to be a CFA charter holder and work as a Hedge Fund manager or Portfolio manager for a reputed financial firm. Therefore the modules on offer within this course such as financial markets, financial instruments, Asset pricing and Portfolio choice and Derivatives, to name a few will be a beneficial prerequisite as I can leverage my current knowledge with these new learned skills to aid me in successfully attaining my desired goals and qualifications. I have already started working towards my goal. Under direct supervision of my Economics and Finance professor (Dr. Maneesha Bhagchandani), I’m currently working on a project titled mathematical strategies and complex financial instruments employed in hedge funds. In this project, I will analyze the complex financial instruments employed in hedge funds like leveraging, long, short, derivatives (options and swaps) and mathematical strategies like arbitrage etc. As mentioned earlier, I have enrolled myself for the level 1 CFA preparation for the June, 2013 exam. The project on hedge funds and preparation for level 1 CFA is corroboration for my testimony of interest in finance. I chose to apply to the University of St Gallen because of your outstanding educational system, your excellent facilities, and your opportunity to closely interact with renowned experts. I intend to improve my knowledge of portfolio management, financial analysis, hedge funds, volatility and returns prediction. The program's excellent courses on financial markets, financial institutions and Quantitative methods are a great fit for my goals. I also hope to get a broader view of finance, improve my academic competence in financial modeling, and gain the skills necessary to reach my full potential.
Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to your positive response.
