Please check my sentences

Hello,
Can you tell me if the following sentences are okay, please?

'They say that a snowy year affects a huge outbreak of caterpillars. Apparently, this is the year. A facility for field athletics has temporarily closed for a month.'

Thank you.

Thank you for the reply.
If I use 'effects' instead of 'affects', would that sentence make sense to you?

Better, but not really; it is not so popularly used. I suggest simply 'causes':

They say that a snowy year causes a huge outbreak of caterpillars. Apparently, this is the year. An athletic field has closed for a month.
