My name is Joseph Kyeyune and I am a graduate of Civil Engineering from Makerere University. I would like to undertake post-graduate studies at StockholmUniversity, in Hydrology, Hydrogeology and Water Resources. This specialization will increase my expertise in addressing both water quantity and quality, learning to understand human influences on the hydrological system, and apply tools, such as modelling, for the proper integration of hydrological knowledge and analysis in water resources planning and management.. I have always gained inspiration from seeing growing societies advance due to streamlined water policies and I believe this is fundamental for economic development in my country. I graduated with honors at Makerere University where I attained solid knowledge in the Civil Engineering field. This has given me opportunity to put in practice the water resources and hydrology theories through proactive contribution to several domestic water supply and irrigation projects’ designs. I have been exposed to Hydrological Modelling, GIS and Hydraulic design using CAD software such as ArcGIS for mapping, Civil CAD 3D for generating alignments and profiles, water CAD for generating schematic lay outs for distribution lines and pipe optimization. My country, being a developing one, is suffering a high population growth rate yet having meager resources for adequate sustainability. Provision of safe water and poor sanitation have thus become a profound challenge yielding to high child mortality, low food supply and poor quality of life. These results from poor management of water resources coupled with adverse drastic climate change. The country has potential to overcome this but lacks qualified and highly skilled personnel to design appropriate systems to manage the environment and water resources. There is evidenced need for development of new technology to harness and generate more bulk safe water at a reasonable cost whilst conserving the environment. I want to make an effort to develop new technology to improve the quality of life in my home land through ensuring increased provision of good quality drinking water. This however purely necessitates expertise originating from further academic and research exposure.
From a careful overview of the Hydrology, Hydrogeology and Water Resources master’s program offered at StockholmUniversity, I strongly believe that the curriculum fully suits my intention and therefore would like to get an opportunity to attend the program. The program too, offers training in soft skills required for successful scientific work which can shape the responsible leader in me, for any implementation in any water and sanitation field agency.
I like to study in a multi-cultural environment as this provides an opportunity to interact with persons from many parts of the world. Such a setting is important in order to blend and bridge knowledge gaps and multi-cultural differences which are very important in as far as career development is concerned. The StockholmUniversity has always been my dream University because it has shaped a number of individuals from my country who have immensely impacted on our society. They have had an equal opportunity to study with persons from the rest of the world. I look forward to see my dreams come true by becoming an alumnus of this August Institution.
