Many people are working longer and longer hours. What are the reasons and effects?


In recent years, there is a growing trend of residents to devote longer time to working hard. There are a number of reasons behind this pattern of behavior, and it leads to various remarkable effects.

There are 2 considerable reasons why people tend to work for longer time nowadays. First at all, due to the significant development of the society, the labor market is becoming more and more competitive. Therefore, the employers’ demand of high-quality personnel is progressively increasing. Thus, to maintain current positions and get promotions, the employee have tendency to work harder and avoid being underestimated or abandoned. For example, in busy China, a working culture called “996” is being drawn attention, quickly becoming a pattern of behavior in current hectic pace of life. The second reason is that the rise in living expenses cause people to work for longer hours and harder to generate enough income. Hence, they are able to afford dramatically increasing bills, rent or save money in order to maintain the stable life.

Since people spend more time working than before, several noticeable effects are resulted. In terms of the national economy, long-hour working apparently contribute to the development and growth in productivity. As a consequence, the country can be more thriving and have the capability to improve its infrastructure and enhance inhabitants’ life. Nevertheless, long hours of working will have repercussions on employee’s health. For instance, personnel are likely to carry health risks, such as having headache, backache or being short-sighted while staring too much on screens. The more pressure they have, the worse well-being they suffer.

In conclusion, more and more people spend longer hours working. This phenomenon is resulted from several reasons, and it leads to various effects.
