Overall, London and Paris have the oldest underground train system in the world. Besides, passengers for Tokyo are the highest, in contrast to Kyoto, which has the lowest number of yearly passengers and the shortest route.
The Metro system in London was opened in 1863 and has the greatest number of kilometers of route, at 394 kilometers, almost doubling the figure for Paris. However, more passengers go by metros in Paris than in London, with 775 million and 1191 million respectively. Tokyo is the busiest of the three with 1928 million passengers yearly and 155 kilometers of route. The proportions of kilometers and passengers in Washington DC, whose underground system was opened in 1976, are 126 and 144 million each.
By contrast, undergrounds are less common in Kyoto and Los Angeles. The lowest number of kilometers is found in Kyoto, with only 11 kilometers, while that in Los Angela is just marginally higher, at 28. The figures for passengers in both cities are almost comparable, at about 50 million.
