The graph illustrates the goods quantities transported in the United Kingdom from 1974 to 2002 by four different transportation modes. Overall, the quantities of goods transported by road, water and pipeline have remarkably increased over the period, whereas the goods quantity carried by rail has remained almost constant.

It is clear from the graph that the largest quantity of goods transported in 1974 was by road while the lowest was by pipeline, about 70 milion tones and 5 milion tones respectively. Interestingly, while the goods quantity transported by road decreased slightly in 1977 and 1992, there was a sharp growth in the goods quatity carried by pipeline. In 1995, however, the quantity of goods transported by rail rose gradually to around 100 milion tones in 2002, but the figure for pipeline stayed almost unchanged at approximately 21 milion tones.

As for water and rail, although the goods quatities carried by these two transportation modes similarly started at roundly 40 milion tones in 1974, the figure for water increased sharply to well over 55 milion tones in 1978, where it remained steady for a period of 18 years before climbing gradually to just under 65 milion tones in 2002, while the figure for rail stayed almost stable over the 28-year period, with moderate decreases in 1985 and 1995.

In conclusion, road has been the most popular method of goods transportation in the UK between 1974 and 2002 while water and pipeline have been increasingly used.
