Please check my IELTS Task 2 Essay.

Weddings are getting bigger and more expensive. What is the reason for this? Is it a positive or negative development?

In the recent times, weddings are being conducted in a much grand style. Apparently, they have become far more elaborate and expensive than they were some years ago. The desire of the rich to flaunt their wealth is a main reason for this. It is certainly a negative development as such weddings are responsible for indiscriminate use of important resources and wastage of food.

Most of these large-scale weddings take place in spacious buildings with many guest rooms. These guest rooms have air-conditioning facility, and the bathrooms, fitted with electric geysers, have continuous supply of water. Since the guests are accountable for neither water nor electricity they tend to be far from judicious while using them—some do not bother to switch off the fans, lights, or air-conditioners when they are not required. Still worse, as some simply do not care to switch them off when they leave the room.

Another serious demerit of such weddings is wastage of large quantities of food. As a considerable number of guests are different geographical, cultural and social backgrounds, their preferences in food is never the same. And, because they do not pay for the food or are under any compulsion to have every dish on the plate, they do not care to refuse when a food they do not like is served. A study conducted in many different States in India in 2019 reported that close to forty percent of food is wasted in weddings. This is highly unfortunate against the fact that the nation has around thirty million people starving.

Thus, it is definitely a negative development as weddings become more and more expensive. Besides being a cause for unregulated use of rare resources, it leads to wastage of enormous amount of food.
