The best curriculum is not one based on a static body of knowledge but one which teaches student to cope with change.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people opine that the best curriculum is the one that considers knowledge a vibrant entity instead of a static body and prepares students to deal with changes. I completely agree with this view because a curriculum that considers knowledge an unchanging entity does a great deal of disservice to students.

Around the world, change has been a permanent feature of the physical environment. Weather systems, flora and fauna, soil composition, occurrence and intensity of natural disasters have undergone a lot changes and there does not seem to be any end to change per se. Further, scientists are continuously discovering and creating things which are totally new or completely change our understanding of things already existing. For example, if were told that say in the 18th century that we would communicate using wireless gadgets in the 21st century, we would not have believed it. Similarly, some fifty years ago, if we would felt it insane if were told a computer would scan our faces and suggest suitable frames for eye glasses.

Personal and social life of human beings also have been through unlimited changes. While some of these changes, such as transition from a nomadic way of life to a settled one, progression in acquisition of knowledge and responses to physical ailments, have been gradual, the last hundred years have seen significant changes in people’s outlook on health and medicine, family, marriage, women, work life balance, emotional intelligence, and mental health, among others. So, if students learn what is already known about, for example heart diseases and the institution of marriage without being told about the new risk factors of heart diseases, or how live-in relationships can affect the future of the off-springs, they will remain ignorant of things that can affect their life in one or many ways.

Thus, a curriculum can be at its best only when it enables the students appreciate the dynamic aspect of knowledge and prepares them to deal with changes. But, the one that treats knowledge as a static body does not provide opportunities to students to know about new things besides making them unprepared for changes.
