It would be argued by some that exploitation of fossil fuels should be expanded to untouched areas in order to meet growing needs of oil and gas. In my view, such an approach is not only detrimental to the surroundings but also ineffective in the long term.
Firstly, dreadful damages to the ecosystem are expected if energy companies are given permisson to draw on resources in those areas. Since mining for fossil fuels includes removing the surface layer of soil with explosives in order to access the resources, this process usually results in nutrient-poor soil in the exploited sites and also, deforestation. As a result, mudslides and other natural disasters are a common sight in such places, which negatively affect the nearby communitites. Also, poorly-managed extraction of oil and gas may lead to leaks of methane, a highly explosive gas, and many other poisonous chemicals, severely threatening the surrounding environment with pollution.
Secondly, extending the amount of exploited sites to obtain more quantities of fossil fuels does not resolve the issue of increasing demand for energy, for which shifting to other energy sources would be a better option. As the global population is likely to increase in the following years, along with industrilization of many nations, non-renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels are not sufficient to provide vasts amounts of energy required for these changes to take place successfully, for such sources will soon run out in the near future. In addition, investing in renewable energy sources would be more effcient compared to the above mearsure, regarding their potentials for becoming a clean, available alternative for fossil fuels as a source of energy.
In conclusion, unexplored regions should not be used to exploit fossil fuels due to disastrous effects to the environment and the fact that this measure is not proficient.
