Some people say that economic growth is the only way to end hunger and poverty, while others say that economic growth is damaging the environment so it must be stopped. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Some people argue that economic growth is the pressing solution to prevent hunger and poverty problems in society. However, I find myself more convinced of the fact that our natural habitat is rapidly destroyed by economic activities so we should end this.

On the one hand, there is no arguing that economic development plays an inevitably vital role in lifting people out of poverty and hunger. In fact, increasing the rate of economic growth implies raising levels of production which is resulting in higher output to meet the demands of consumers. For example, In some developing countries such as Vietnam or Cambodia, residents’ needs lack some basic necessities ranging from milk or organic food. As a result, governments must allocate their resource to producing essential items and develop their economy. In addition, economic growth means lowering the unemployment rate, creating many job opportunities in today’s job market volatility. If a nation has a developed economy, multinational corporations will recruit more labours. This can lead to rising income, advancing living standards, and generate a great deal of the wealth in the nation at large. Particularly, in the US, which is regarded as one of the most developed countries has the highest proportion of wealthy persons across the world. This is clear evidence for this.

On the other hand, it is true that economic development is causing habitat destruction. First, in order to maximize profits, manufacturing establishments have tried uttermost to create more goods to meet their consumer needs. Although, this is a good reason in raising the nation’s economy, mostly non-renewable energy is used in manufacturing. Consequently, dependence on fossil fuel is causing knock-out effects on our environment such as climate change, global warming, or pollution. Second, the exploitation of resources in manufacturing processes is an important problem, companies in various industries are depleting natural resources causing the disappearance of natural habitat and endangered species. In particular, for instance, deforestation in Amazon to construct some agricultural farms providing food for exports, this has caused losing thousands of wild animals.

In conclusion, economic growth plays a key role in end to hunger and poverty. But, the government should take into consideration to stop this because of warming environmental problems.
